Too much cortisol is bad for muscles, by Dr. Martin
Hey, its Dr. Martin
In previous emails, I have mentioned that some can’t lose weight even if they’re doing everything right simply because their cortisol levels are through the roof.
Cortisol is anabolic for fat — meaning it builds up fat.
Remember, you are responsible for WHAT you put in your mouth but after that your hormones decide WHERE it goes. And if your cortisol levels are too high then your body has little choice but to build more fat.
Now, I want to talk about something else I mentioned in the last email cortisol is CATABOLIC for muscle meaning it breaks down muscle. That isn’t good either and few even talk about it.
After 40, you can lose 8% of your muscle mass every decade. When you lose too much muscle mass you end up with a condition called Sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a major cause of disability as we age.
Also, sarcopenia and osteoporosis go hand in hand which is a bad combination.
One of the effects of sarcopenia is you’re more likely to fall. Add in osteoporosis and that fall will result in broken bones.
But there’s more to maintaining muscle mass than preventing sarcopenia and osteoporosis. Women with breast cancer with more muscle mass have a 60% better chance of survival. That’s huge. (Do you think anyone with breast cancer is told to increase muscle mass?)
Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) with more muscle spend less time on the ventilator less time in the ICU and have a better chance of survival. People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who have more muscle experience better respiratory outcomes.
People with lower muscle mass have more severe Alzheimer’s and ALL CAUSE mortality and CANCER-associated mortality are TWICE as likely in people with low muscle mass compared to those with high muscle mass.
In short…
Muscles = stronger bones
Muscles = stronger brain
Muscles = stronger heart
Muscles = stronger immune system
I want to hammer home how important muscle is to normal aging. I can’t overstate the importance of muscle.
A stressed person or a person who has high cortisol levels is at risk of severe muscle wasting. And for fat loss too much cortisol is a double whammy.
You need muscle for normal metabolism.
So high cortisol can cause you to store too much fat and ruin your metabolism at the same time controlling cortisol is often overlooked when it comes to weight loss…
And aging well.
Talk soon,
Dr. Martin

The Microbiome and Your Arteries
If you are uncertain what the microbiome is or what it has to do with metabolism you can find out above in Metabolism Definitions.
Thus....
There is an interesting connection between your microbiome and your arteries. In mice studies, when the mice lack a healthy gut microbiome, they tend to develop a lot of inflammation.
Inflammation in the arteries triggers a cascade of damaging effects. An overall imbalance of the microorganisms in the body can also lead to various problems in the arteries.
One of the most important vitamins for the arteries is vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 helps keep calcium buildup out of the arteries.
The microbes in your gut have the ability to make vitamin K2, but fermented foods and fatty foods are also rich in vitamin K2.
Keep in mind that vitamin K2 works better when taken with vitamin D3. For every 100 mcg of vitamin K2, consider taking 10,000 IU of vitamin D3.
Probiotics are crucial to support healthy arteries, and your friendly microbes are your natural probiotics. It’s important to support your microbiome and avoid sterile foods like pasteurized and over-processed foods.
The best meal to clean out the arteries:
• Brie cheese
• Fatty pork sausage
• Sauerkraut
Each of these foods is fermented and loaded with vitamin K2. Give them a try, and start adding other alive and fermented foods to your diet.

Why Camel Milk is the Superfood You Need?
Dr. Cori Stern of Health Point Natural Nutrition Center in Flushing, NY, discovered the benefits of camel milk and uses it to help her patients improve their health.
Why is Camel Milk So Special?
- Camels have a unique ability to adapt to harsh conditions due to an unusual genetic makeup. They have genes which create a superior metabolism and immune system, which is why they can survive in their environment and are more resistant to infectious disease.
- Camel antibodies can actually help humans to overcome and prevent autoimmune issues as well as metabolic issues, such as fatty liver and high blood sugar.
- Camel milk has been known for its medicinal properties for thousands of years and many studies have proven its benefits.
- Camel milk is usually well tolerated by people who cannot tolerate cow milk because it's molecularly more similar to human mothers' milk and it does not contain the proteins that most people struggle with in cow milk - A1 beta-casein and lactoglobulin.
- While camel milk does contain lactose, it contains less lactose than cow milk and seems to be better tolerated by people who are lactose intolerant.
- Camel milk is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, immunoglobulins, and has antibacterial and antiviral properties.
- Camel milk contains prebiotics and probiotics to support better gut health.
- An added bonus is that camel milk can improve the quality of your skin. It helps improve moisture, skin tone, and brightness, enhances collagen production and elasticity, and may even help with acne.
