What is Your Criteria for Health?
The
secret to having a healthy body is simple. Chiropractic and nutrition
are fundamental to maintaining good health. You
know how you feel about life when your body just doesn't seem to be
working right. People who work to continually improve their health are
happier. What would your body say to you if it could speak?
No
Pain Doesn't Mean Chiropractic is Unnecessary
The need for a chiropractic adjustment is not always signaled by pain or
muscular tension. We use our bodies everyday in life. The more active
you are, the more your body takes a beating. You may even, at times,
have had pain, waited a couple of days and felt better. Does this mean
you don't need an adjustment? Not necessarily.
I have a patient who had fallen. She did a couple of things to assist her
back. She was completely out of pain. Three months later, her friend
took her aside and mentioned to her that she had noticed she had seemed
unhappy and particularly sensitive (grumpy) the last few months.
Upon
reflection, things were going very well for her in life. She thought
back and remembered that she had fallen. This seemed to coincide with
the time her friend indicated things had changed. Even though she had no
symptoms of pain, she decided to come in for an adjustment. Sure enough,
one of her ribs was out of place. It was a dramatic adjustment. She
said after the adjustment, she realized that she had not been getting a
good night's rest. Although she felt no pain, her body and nervous
system were not happy.
Why One Should Come in for Maintenance Visits
Because
we use and even sometimes abuse our bodies, I recommend that
patients get a maintenance adjustment every six months. If you
wait until you are in pain before you come in, your joints are
already degenerating. Why wait? A maintenance visit keeps your
joints and you healthy and happy.
I had another patient who was due for his maintenance visit. Because
he didn't have any pains, he decided it was unnecessary. Within
the week, his back went out and he was in a great deal of pain.
Instead of one maintenance visit, he had to come in three times to
handle his back.
So not only is it healthier to come in and maintain good health but
more cost efficient. This is the same as doing regular oil changes
on your car. You wouldn't wait until the engine froze or had
problems, you change your oil every three months or so. This is
much better for your car and more cost effective.
Your
body is a complex mechanism, far more complex than a car with
hidden functions that can malfunction without your noticing which
you use everyday. Treat it well and it will take you far. Don't
wait for that pain.
Sincerely,
Dr. Mike Spearman

B12 Deficiencies - Myths and Truth
We found this site written by a person who almost died from an
undiagnosed B12 deficiency. It is worth reading.
She states:
"This
is the place to learn about: who might need B12; various reasons a
person might need B12; why B12 deficiency is seriously
underdiagnosed; things to keep in mind when choosing a B12
vitamin; and more. Far too much of the
medical literature has not been updated on this subject in
many years, some even decades, and researchers have made giant
leaps since then."

Deficiencies - You have to read down the the first page
intro and you will find a directory.
Neuropathy,
why the pain, the tingling and the numbness?
What causes this debilitating pain, burning,
painful touch, lack of coordination and balance, and
cramps?
Neuropathy has many symptoms.
It may start with a tingling feeling and end up with
numbness. It
can be a pricking, or burning sensation, loss of reflexes and
muscle shrinkage, abnormal sensations, or sensitivity to touch.
Its worse symptom is pain, sometimes so excruciating that a
person would amputate rather then continue the pain.
It is called many names such as paresthesia,
neuritis, neuralgia, dysesthensia, hypoesthesia, hypesthesia,
hypalgesia, hypealgesia and hyperesthesia due to its many
different kinds of symptoms.
But, what underlies all these symptoms?
They are created by a specific type of nerve
damage. This nerve damage can come from too much sugar in the
blood (the reason it is a side effect of diabetes). It can be
caused by exposure to chemicals such as cancer treatments,
poisons, alcoholism, or a side effect of some medications.
It can be the result of kidney or liver failure, infectious
disease or nutritional deficiencies especially B vitamins.
The reasons are many; the damage they produce is the same.
What creates the problem is damage done to the
outer lining of the nerve cell.
Cells have coverings much like an electrical wire has an
insulation of plastic. Have
you ever seen a wire whose insulation is damaged – the
electrical current doesn’t flow correctly. It can send
electricity out from the area where it is damaged, it can stop the
flow of electricity or it can damage what its supposed to be
supplying electricity to.
A damaged nerve covering does the same thing.
It can send out “sparks” that cause tingling, it can
stop the flow resulting in numbness.
It can create feelings of hot or cold or a sensitivity due
to crossed signals. It
can definitely cause pain especially as the damage gets worse.
The idea is to fix this outer covering.
This is called the myelin sheath.
What is needed is specific B vitamins.
The only question is how to get these B vitamins in
sufficient amounts so that the body can actually repair the
damage. Isolated
B vitamins that are sold at the health food stores or local drug
stores get washed out of the system too quickly to fix the damage.
It would be hard to take enough of this type of nutrients
to make a difference. You
can’t get it from vitamins made in a laboratory.
What is needed is a whole food supplement with
methylcobalamine and benfotiamine and other B vitamins that the
body can use to repair the cells.
That is one of the functions of the body, to repair cells.
But it does need specific nutrients to do its job.
Nutrients are what a body runs on.
A car runs on gas. If
you drive the car down the road, it uses up a steady amount of
that gas. If you take
that same car and speed down the freeway, you will use up a lot of
gas. When you
take a body “out on the freeway”, or put it under physical
stress, it uses up a lot more nutrients.
Thus, getting the right supplements in the right amount is
important.
Just as a car won’t drive without giving it gas.
A body can’t repair itself (or function correctly)
without the proper nutrients it needs to “drive”. In the case
of neuropathy, it needs these B vitamins.
Neuropathy can be a side effect of many things. Although most often it is caused by too much sugar in
the blood - Diabetes - there are many factors.
Chemoitherapy
and some drugs have neuropathy as a side effect and it can be
caused by surgery damaging the nerves - there are others.

The
Question of Vitamin B-12
Vitamin
B-12 is necessary in human health for the formation of proteins
and red blood cells, and for the functioning of the nervous
system. It is vitally important in maintaining the health of the
outer sheathing (protective covering, also called the myelin
sheath) that surrounds nerve cells.
B-12 also participates in a variety of cellular reactions to
release energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
Vitamin B-12 is found only in animal products; meat, fish, eggs,
and dairy products. Most people’s diets do not contain
sufficient B-12, and so, over the years, the amount of B-12
diminishes in the body till there is an actual deficiency of this
important vitamin.
Absorption of vitamin B-12 from food occurs in a unique way.
Vitamin B-12 is released from food by digestion, especially by
stomach acid. The vitamin B-12 binds with a special protein that
is secreted by the mucous membrane of the stomach called the
“intrinsic factor.”
The resulting complex travels to the last section of the small
intestine, called the ileum. Ileum cells then absorb vitamin B-12.
Absorption is very poor unless the “intrinsic factor” is
present.
As the body ages it often produces lower quantities of both
stomach acid and the “intrinsic factor,” thus reducing the
amount of B-12 that can be absorbed from the diet.
The vitamins and minerals in food are constantly being used to
create and support the life processes in the body and must be
replenished from time to time.
Because the body’s reserves of B-12 continues to drop as our
body ages, doctors often recommend B-12 shots each month for older
people.
As most people don’t like shots, they often supplement what they
need with vitamin pills, capsules, drinks, etc. Most of these
contain a form of B-12 called cyanocobalamin, which is not usable
by the body.
A very small percentage of cyanocobalamin is converted into
methylcobalamin and stored in the liver. As the body ages, it
becomes less and less able to convert cyanocobalamin to
methylcobalamin, so use methycobalomin for real results you can
feel.
There is no upper limit to the amount of B-12 that you can safely
take without any side effects. The RHP Nerve Support Formula
contains the methylcobalamin and other B vitamins you need to
